Seniors

In an effort to put into practice the Prophet Muhammad’s teachings on respecting and caring for the elderly, the Islamic Foundation offers programs for seniors in our community. From arts workshops and summer picnics to fitness classes and health clinics, the masjid offers a space for the elderly to gather socially, develop friendships and receive emotional support. COMMUNITY/ SENIOR EVENTS AND PROGRAMS

Islam places great emphasis on respecting and dignifying seniors, whether they are Muslims or not. Therapeutic relationships between individuals are an elemental aspect of our faith, with a special focus on maintaining good relations with elders.

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was a pioneer in this field. He taught caring for the elderly irrespective of sex, color, or religion, and he himself set a great example in practicing the principles he taught. We as Muslims must strive to emulate his teachings and actions and uphold the principles and values expected of us with respect to respecting and caring for our elders.

“He is not one of us who does not show tenderness to the young and who does not show respect to the elder.” [Hadith from at-Tirmidhi].

Statistics reports of Ontario shows that the number of seniors aged 65 and over in Ontario is expected to more than double, from 13.7% or 1.8 million people in 2009 to 4.2 million or 23.4%, by 2036.

According to the World Health Organization, “Older people are a wonderful resource for their families, communities and in the formal or informal workforce. They are a repository of knowledge. They can help us avoid making the same mistakes again. The societies that adapt to this changing demographic can reap a sizeable ‘longevity dividend’, and will have a competitive advantage over those that don’t.”

Seniors have the right to be recognized and treated as important members of society. We want our seniors to feel safe and supported and to remain healthy and independent. We want to help them to remain active and engaged.

Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “If a young one honors an elderly on account of his/her age, Allah appoints someone to honor him in his/her old age.” (At-Tirmidhi)
